Celebrate Dad in June
Last month we celebrated mom for all she does. This month we pay homage to the father of every family. Dad is the one who taught us how to be strong, keep
a clear head, put together a model airplane, a train set, play baseball or watch football. And what about the tea parties at the little table and the
misty eyes on prom night? The list is endless. This man is the one that many a young child looks up to for strength and guidance and as their role model.
And what better place to be with him on Father's Day than outside in front of the barbeque. Maybe dad will even let you have a hand at the grill this time
(maybe...). Try grilling up some fresh vegetables to go with that steak or shrimp on the grill. Or give our Grilled Broccolini™ Beef Samurai Sticks a try
on the grill. Dad will be impressed. Mom may have said "Eat your broccoli", but after dad has this dish he'll be telling all of you to eat your Broccolini™.

National Men's Health Week
As we approach Father's Day, it's also time to turn our focus on men's health. This issue is a family affair. Prostate cancer falls behind skin cancer as
the second most common cancer in men. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 192,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed this year
in the United States.
And when it comes to skin cancer According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit group that receives funding from companies that market sunscreen, men
have nearly double the rates of squamous and basal cell carcinomas that women have. And for melanoma-the deadliest type of skin cancer-men have the highest
chances of dying of the disease, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Of the approximate 8,420 people who died of melanoma in 2008, about 64
percent of them were men, the group says.
Eating a healthy diet rich in vitamin K has shown promising results in lowering the risks for cancer. These foods include broccoli, Broccolini™, Brussels
sprouts, kale, cauliflower, asparagus and okra to name a few. Although diet alone cannot prevent cancer adding these items to your daily diet can lower the
risk factor.
So please encourage the men in your life to go for a yearly screening for these two preventable and curable diseases. For more information on men's health go

A Little Stress Relief
The day to day stress with the world and our economy touches each of us every day. The challenge is how do we stay upbeat, strong and keep our perspective
positive. Short tempers are bound to ensue with the best of us.
A friend of mine had a day of stress recently. The alarm didn't go off, she was late to work, and her boss was early. She spilled coffee on her clothes while
driving to work. Nothing went according to plan at the office. Her daughter's school called in the afternoon, because she was late for the parent teacher
conference. She raced to the school, then with her daughter on to the market to get something for dinner. As she was pulling onto her street a crazed
driver cut her off and she just missed hitting the neighbor's cat. She exploded at the other driver, who responded back to her "Go fly a kite", and a
few other things not worth mentioning. She stopped in mid response, became very calm and decided that was exactly what she would do. She ran in the
house, grabbed her daughter's kite and off they went for an hour. Nothing much that went wrong during the day mattered after that. She and the kite
had a new perspective.
Sometimes it's the small things we forget to enjoy for free that can give us back our perspective. And of course broccoli.

The Women & Men Behind Mann!
Mann Employee Profile
Employee: Mercedes Ledesma
Mercedes Ledesma learned how to do her job as production scheduler at Mann Packing from the ground up, literally.
She started with the company fifteen years ago in an entry level position on the broccoli cutting line. Within a year she was promoted to crew leader
and then later onto the sales team as a data entry clerk -the entry level position for the sales department. After growing in that department into a
sales assistant position, management offered her the opportunity to take on a new position in the company as a production manager.
"They thought about me for the position because they knew I had learned the business."

Consumer Questions & Answers
Most frequently asked questions for June 2009:
Question # 1 : I can't consume the entire package of Broccoli Wokly at one meal. How do I steam the remainder in the bag after it is opened?
Answer # 1 : You have a couple of options. You can put one inch of water in a pan, add the veggies and cover. Steam for about 3 minutes. Or put
the veggies on a microwavable plate, season, cover with a wet paper towel and microwave on high for 1 ‡ to 2 minutes.
Question # 2: When I got home from the market, I noticed the best date on the package had past. Are the veggies still good?
Answer #2: Our fresh veggies have a 16 day shelf life. The best date is the 16th day, and that is the day we guarantee the product will be
fresh through. We use no additives or preservatives in our products. It's possible for it to last longer, but not a guarantee. To test for
freshness, make sure there is no overly strong odor or browning of the veggies. If either of these conditions exists past the best date,
discard the package. If an item is past the best date the motto is "When in doubt, throw it out".
And please always check the best date when purchasing. It is located on the front upper right hand corner of our packages.
What ever your plans are this month, keep exercising, enjoy the warm weather and keep eating you fresh vegetables!
Sincerely,
Susan Cameron
