Pre-schoolers Diet Mimics Unhealthy Adult Diet
By Caroline Scott-Thomas, 20-Oct-2009 for Food Navigator

Many American preschoolers do not eat any fruit or vegetables in a given day and most eat too much sodium and saturated fat. A situation reminiscent of adult habits, according to NestlÈ-sponsored research.

The results of the NestlÈ Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS), carried out by non-partisan research organization Mathematica Policy Research, were presented at the American Dietetic Association's Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo this week. The last FITS study was carried out in 2002, and comparisons show that there have been some significant improvements in infant nutrition during the intervening six years, although there are still areas of concern, NestlÈ said.

In particular, consumption of sweets and sweetened beverages among infants aged nine to 11 months has dropped from 59 percent in 2002 to 43 percent, and mothers are breast feeding their children for longer, with 33 percent of nine to 11 month old babies still receiving breast milk, compared to 21 percent in 2002

Consumer Questions & Answers
Most frequently asked questions for October 2009:

Question # 1 : Where I shop in NYC, they are selling a product called Aspiration as California Broccolini. Is it Mann's Broccolini??

Answer # 1 : Excellent question. No it is not Mann's Broccolini. We own the trademark on Broccolini, so if it does not say Mann's, it is not Broccolini. Plus, Aspiration is grown in Mexico. We would be happy to contact them and let them know they have an advertising error. Maybe we can sell them the "real thing".

Consumer Spotlight: Our consumer Casey, from Minnesota just discovered our "Steam in Bag" produce. After one package of the Broccoli Cauliflower, she went back for 4 more. Casey has told her friends, mom and the produce clerk about the steam feature, and they are all buying it now!

Fall is in the air. Some states are already experiencing snow. Brrrrrr! The holidays are just around the corner. Remember to eat your fresh vegetables through the cold weather. Add them to stews, make comforting soups and salads. Keep moving and stay healthy.
